Learn why original records matter and what to ask a lawyer about evidence after a crash.

Keep what you already have

  • Save original photos, videos, and messages.
  • Keep letters, receipts, and report information in one place.
  • Make a backup without editing or deleting originals.

Other records may need a request

Camera footage, business records, or vehicle data may be controlled by someone else. A lawyer may consider preservation requests or other lawful steps. Do not access private accounts or property.

Some records are temporary

Retention rules vary. FMCSA guidance describes a limited period for certain driver logs and supporting documents.

Ask what needs attention

Describe records you know about to a lawyer promptly. Preservation requests do not guarantee evidence exists, will be provided, or will support a claim.

Texas Injury Desk is not a law firm and gives no legal advice. It offers general information only, does not accept case inquiries, and reading it does not create an attorney-client relationship.
